Counselling
What is Counselling? Counselling is about being in a trusting, respectful relationship where clients are listened to carefully and helped in a variety of ways. Counsellors seek to assist clients to increase understanding of themselves and their relationships with others, to develop more resourceful ways of living, and to bring about change they seek in their lives. Counsellors respect clients? individuality, lifestyles and culture. Counselling relationships may be formed with individuals, couples, families, groups, communities and organizations. What can Counsellors help with? Counsellors are trained in a wide variety of ways of helping people. These include building and maintaining purposeful and helpful relationships, and using cognitive/ behavioural, systemic and narrative approaches as well as in-depth models including psychodynamic approaches. Because of this, counsellors are able to help clients experiencing a wide variety of issues such as:
- Relationships
- Sexual, physical and emotional abuse
- Grief and loss
- Trauma
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Reducing stress
- Self esteem
- Anger problems
- Alcohol and drug dependency
- Spirituality
When choosing a counsellor. Take time to talk with the counsellor first to ensure you feel generally comfortable with their personal attributes and style. It is your right to ask which professional association a counsellor belongs to. You may wish to see a copy of the counsellor?s Code of Ethics. Counsellors will refer you to the best available worker, if she or he can?t help.
